CHE vs AVL Carabao Cup: 5 Chelsea players who could be handed their first starts of the season #CHEAVL

Chelsea will take on Aston Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel will have a chance to rest some key players while some other members of the squad who have not played much so far this season will have an opportunity to impress.

Here are 5 players who could make their first start of the season against Villa.

1. Ben Chilwell

Marcos Alonso’s excellent form at the start of the season has kept Ben Chilwell firmly on the bench.

The England international finally made his first appearance of the season in the closing minutes of the UEFA Champions League game against Zenit St. Petersburg last week.

He is likely to get his first start of the season against the Villains as he looks to regain his starting spot.

2. Timo Werner

Timo Werner was one of the players that played the most number of minutes last season.

However, the German forward has found minutes very hard to come by so far this season.

He most certainly will make his first start of the season in this game while Romelu Lukaku most likely gets his much needed rest.

Another possible option could be the fans seeing the Lukaku Werner pivot from the onset for the first time this season.

3. Malang Sarr

Antonio Rüdiger is the only player who has played every minute for Chelsea in all competitions this season. He needs a rest and will definitely be given one on Wednesday. The question then, is who starts in his place?

Andreas Christensen or Marcos Alonso can play in his left centre back position. However, another option is the naturally left-footed Malang Sarr who was decent in pre-season and was given a squad number for this season.

The free signing could get his very first chance to impress on a competitive level for the blues.

4. Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek made his first appearance for Chelsea in over a year against Zenit in the UCL last week.

He will be looking to earn his first start under Thomas Tuchel against Villa on Wednesday.

5. Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley is yet to make a competitive appearance for Chelsea since returning from his loan spell at Aston Villa last season.

The Englishman has a lot to prove to stand any chance of breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s lineup.

If he starts, a good performance against the club he played for last season will be a good way to begin.

Here is how Chelsea’s lineup could look like if all 5 of the players listed above make the starting XI.

In reality, Thomas Tuchel isn’t likely to start all 5 players but there is no ruling out the likelihood all of these players getting involved at some point.

Here is a prediction of the lineup Thomas Tuchel is actually likely to pick for the game against Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
