Petr Cech is making a surprise return to action for Chelsea as the Blues’ development squad takes on Tottenham in tonight’s Premier League 2 clash.

Cech, 38, is the club’s technical and performance director but has been training with the first team, and was registered as emergency cover in Chelsea’s Premier League squad in October.

Cech has not played competitively since he retired after the Europa League Final between Arsenal and Chelsea in 2019, when he kept goal for the Gunners.

Chelsea have confirmed, however, he will start in tonight’s fixture against Tottenham at Kings-meadow this evening.

A win for Chelsea would take them top of the table above current leaders Manchester City, while a victory for Spurs would see them leapfrog the Blues.

While Cech is at one end of his career, the likes of Tino Anjorin, Myles Peart-Harris and Tino Livramento will want to prove that they can play a part in Frank Lampard’s senior squad this season
