Chelsea become the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League

Things are looking up for Chelsea this season, as results are going their way. They spent a lot in the summer to bring in quality players and thankfully, those players are living up to expectations.
In the Champions League in particular, the Blues have been near flawless. Prior to today’s game against Stade Rennes, they had won two and drawn one of their previous three games, keeping three clean sheets.
And now, they are through to the Champions League round of 16.
Chelsea defeated Stade Rennes in their fourth Group E fixture in France on Tuesday evening, sealing a place in the round of 16. The Blues started the brighter side and while Timo Werner missed a glorious chance, they went ahead after Callum Hudson-Odoi finished a fantastic pass from Mason Mount. Rennes grew stronger as the half progressed, but the Blues maintained their lead at the break.
It was more of the same in the second period as Rennes continued to press, before grabbing an equalizer, with Guirassy firing a bullet header past the excellent Mendy. But Chelsea had the last say as Olivier Giroud headed he the rebound after Timo Werner’s shot was saved. The victory sees Chelsea move up to 10 points.
Sevilla also defeated Krasnodar 2-1 in the other group game, moving them to 10 points. This means Chelsea, alongside Sevilla, are now officially the first teams to book their spot in the Round of 16 of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League.
Congrats to the Blues!
