Chelsea now top: See how the Premier League table looks after Chelsea beat Newcastle

Published

Chelsea defeated Newcastle United in a lunchtime Premier League kickoff at the St. James’ Park on Saturday. The Blues were dominant from start to finish, and created a lot of chances but were wasteful, particularly Timo Werner, who missed a number of chances.

The Blues took the lead after some good play, and Mason Mount’s cross was turned in accidentally by Federico Fernandez under pressure from Ben Chilwell. They created tonnes of chances, but couldn’t convert, with Timo Werner particularly guilty of being wasteful.

They continued to dominate after the break, and Timo Werner made up for it with a wonderful assist for Tammy Abraham, who made it 2-0. Newcastle pressed in the final minutes with Long staff hitting the bar and Mendy making a big save, but it ended 2-0 in favour of the away side.

The win sees Chelsea moving up to the top of the Premier league with 18 points, ahead on goals difference over Leicester City.

There will of course be note games to come later today, but Chelsea will likely finish the day on top.
