Chelsea player ratings as Mendy and Silva impress but Werner struggles

Published

In a showdown between the master and apprentice, Jose Mourinho will be happier than Frank Lampard after Tottenham held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

Both teams have been full of goals this season but unsurprisingly it was a tight and cagey affair as the away side sat deep and looked to play on the counter while the home team passed and probed for a breakthrough.

The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was in the second half with Mason Mount’s shot from distance tipped around the post by Hugo Lloris.

Defences were well on top with Thiago Silva keeping in-form Harry Kane quiet and debutant Joe Roden performing admirably against Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner.

Chelsea player ratings

Edouard Mendy – 7

Made a good save to deny Serge Aurier in the first half and didn’t have a save to make in the second half.

Reece James – 6

Didn’t get forward much in the first half but early in the second he put in two fine crosses which Abraham nearly got on the end of.

Thiago Silva – 7

Another commanding display by the Brazilian centre-back to keep Harry Kane quiet.

Kurt Zouma – 7

The Frenchman continued his fine partnership with Thiago Silva but was booked in the second half.

Ben Chilwell – 6

The left-back has made a big difference for Chelsea at the back and going forward but he wasn’t able to attack as much as he would have liked today.

N’Golo Kante – 6

With Harry Kane dropping deep to influence the game, Kante stayed close to the striker and blocked the space for the Tottenham forward.

Mateo Kovacic – 6

The Croatian sat deep for much of the match and kept things neat and tidy. Lampard would have wanted more from him to break down Tottenham.

Mason Mount – 6

A quiet game from the England international and he was booked in the second half. Had a shot from outside the box saved by Lloris.

Hakim Ziyech – 6

Chelsea’s liveliest player on the ball but Tottenham’s deep defence made it hard to unlock. Taken off late on for Havertz.

Timo Werner – 6

Had a goal disallowed in the first half for offside in the first half but aside from that he wasn’t in the game much.

Tammy Abraham – 5

Well marshalled by Tottenham’s two centre-backs and unable to stamp his authority on the match

  • Harry Kane

  • Tottenham Hotspur FC
