Chelsea told to sign new Didier Drogba and abandon Anthony Gordon transfer

CHELSEA have just over a week to complete their summer transfer business.

Chelsea need to spend their money on signing a new Didier Drogba rather than Everton winger Anthony Gordon, according to former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor. Chelsea are hopeful of signing Gordon and are prepared to pay up to £60million for the 21-year-old.

The Merseyside-born star wants to move to Stamford Bridge after just one full season in the Everton first team. Chelsea duo Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja have been linked with a potential move in the opposite direction to Goodison Park.

The Toffees do not want to sell Gordon but the player’s desire and Chelsea’s offer may be too hard to say no to. But Agbonlahor has questioned why such a big fee is being spent on a wide player.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona. But Agbonlahor reckons a younger, out-and-out No 9 should be brought in, in the mould of former Blues favourites Drogba or Diego Costa.

He told talkSPORT: “[The Gordon deal] just doesn’t make sense. Everyone’s shocked, you look at social media and you usually get a feel for it. £60m is quite a lot, I’ve watched him quite a lot.

“He’s a young lad, he’s played for the under-21s, he’s going to keep improving. It just seems very strange from Chelsea.

“Surely that £60m could go out, I don’t know what strikers are available, but go out and get that top No 9 that they need. Aubameyang’s a good player but he wasn’t at his best form at Arsenal, Barcelona are going to let him go.

“They need a Diego Costa, a Drogba, Chelsea. I feel like that’s what they’re missing. I look at Sterling and Havertz, they need someone to play off.”

Everton have picked up just one point from their opening three matches of the season. But Agbonlahor can understand selling a star player for as much as Chelsea are prepared to offer.

He added: “I think it’s strange for Everton to even think of selling him. But when you talk about this amount of money, you have to sell him.

“When you’re talking £60m, for me he’s a £30m, £40m at most, player. He can get at players, he can put a good delivery in, he can score a goal.

“But it’s hard to see where £60m has come from. It’s strange from Chelsea because they need a No 9. They’ve got wingers, they’ve got enough wingers in the building.

“Is Gordon really going to change Chelsea from a wide point of view? Not for me, they need a striker.
