EPL: Why The Referee Was Wrong To Give Emerson Royal A Red Card For His Challenge On Martinelli

Arsenal secured an important win in their crucial Premier League clash against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was an impressive performance from Arteta’s men, and the manager would be really pleased with the result of the contest.

It took Arsenal less than 20 minutes to grab the first goal of the game as Partey curls the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

Tottenham got themselves back into the game as Harry Kane managed to find the back of the net from just 12 yards out.

Arsenal regained their lead in the second half in the most surprising fashion. This time it was Gabriel Jesus that tapped the ball home from close range after an embarrassing error from Hugo Lloris.

Emerson Royal was handed a straight red card for his audacious tackle on Martinelli in the 62nd minute.

Arsenal’s numerical advantage was quite evident throughout the course of the game as they dominated possession and created a lot of chances. Xhaka sealed the win for Arsenal in the 68th minute with a sublime strike from close range.

However, it is quite easy to blame the referee for the outcome of the game. There is no doubt that Arsenal would have found it very difficult to earn all three points if the referee didn’t award Royal a red card for his challenge in Martinelli.

I guess the referee was wrong to give Emerson a red card for his tackle on Martinelli because it was clearly not an intentional act
