Frank Lampard wants Chelsea aggression against West Ham after back-to-back defeats

Frank Lampard has called for more aggression from Chelsea against West Ham tonight as they bid to get back on track after consecutive defeats dented their title hopes.

Chelsea have slipped to eighth after losing against Everton and Wolves, and they are nine points behind leaders Liverpool going into this evening’s derby at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard is eager to play down expectations around his lavishly assembled team but he was unhappy with last Tuesday’s disappointing display at Molineux.

He gave his jaded players two days off to recharge and he expects more intensity in their game when they play a West Ham side going well under David Moyes.

“There were some similarities [in the two defeats],” said Lampard. “Everton were more aggressive than us in the early part of the game and then very well organised to stop us creating like we normally do. With Wolves, I did not feel that aggression in the game but we did not add aggression after.

“We were playing at a really good level before, particularly up to the Leeds game. You look at our unbeaten run and there were lots of things I like to see in our game, when we run at speed and we sprint and we move the ball quickly. We came off that in both those games. It is very important we get those back, because we got punished in those two games.

“We had a couple of days off which I think was important. I thought we looked tired in the Wolves game in the end. I felt two days off and a reboot was important. We then had three days into West Ham.

“Of course when you lose two matches, with the expectation, players will take two defeats as a bad thing and they need to react. It is about making sure we remember the good things we were doing before those two games and getting back to the basic rules of football.”
