It’s gone completely unnoticed just how brilliant Chelsea’s £24m man was on Sunday

One man that deserves the spotlight put on him for his latest performance is Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso.

There has been so many talking points come out of Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final, with the latter sealing the trophy on penalties.

The likes of Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have rightfully received widespread praise for their individual contributions.

Elsewhere, there has been plenty of discussion regarding Thomas Tuchel’s decision to substitute on Blues goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for the penalty shootout, something which turned out to be a mistake.

However, Alonso’s display on the weekend seems to have gone completely unnoticed.

The £24million player put in one of his most assured performances in a Chelsea shirt over the last few months. In addition, this was in direct competition against Liverpool’s world-class right-hand side of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Alonso will always defy Chelsea critics
Yes, Alonso’s got his flaws and can be caught out at times defensively.

The Spanish full-back really stepped up to the occasion a couple of days ago, though.

It was a real throwback to the kind of form the 31-year-old started the season in, which was at a time he was keeping teammate Ben Chilwell out of the starting line-up.

In fairness, most would consider Chilwell the outstanding left wing-back at the club.

His long-term injury means Tuchel needs to rely on Alonso, and he showed his worth with Sunday’s gritty performance.

He made a couple of great interventions from inside his own penalty box to save his side, as well as show much better signs positionally. His Who.Scored match rating was an impressive 7.99, too.

The serial Chelsea winner has given a reminder to the Blues fanbase, as well as his manager, that he’s still capable of performing to a great standard in the biggest games.

Versatile defender Malang Sarr has had some game time on the left of the defence recently, but Alonso should be thrilled with how he played.

Of course, everyone knows how much of an attacking threat he can usually be
