Petr Cech celebrates win over Tottenham on his return to action for Chelsea

Latest Chelsea news takes a closer look at Petr Cech’s sensational return to action in their Premier League 2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Kingsmeadow
All eyes were on Chelsea legend Petr Cech in the Blues’ Premier League 2 clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
It was revealed over the weekend that the goalkeeper would make a sensational return to action at Kingsmeadow on Monday because the Blues did not want regular under-23s goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom playing twice in 48 hours after turning out for the under-18s on Saturday.
The decision to go with Cech was somewhat of a surprise as Chelsea could have fielded fellow young goalkeeper Karlo Ziger in between the sticks.
However, the Croatian is currently part of the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea did not want to run the risk of Ziger mixing between the two squads and facing a further test for Covid-19 next week.
As a result, Cech was named in a youthful u23’s line-up – which also included forgotten midfielder Danny Drinkwater – against Spurs.
And it was an interesting night for the 38-year-old.
After 17 minutes he faced two shots and conceded two goals. The first was very much his own doing as his attempt to play out from the back saw him kick the ball out for a corner.
From the resulting set-piece, Spurs worked it short and a ball into the box was turned home by Jubril Okedina.
Cech and the Blues youngsters’ night went from bad to worse when the visitors doubled their lead when Dane Scarlett headed home a brilliant cross from close range.
Luckily, the night did improve as Chelsea fought back from two goals down in the second half to win 3-2 thanks to a brace from Myles Peart-Harris and Marcel Lewis’ strike.
Overall, Cech’s first appearance at any level in football since losing the 2019 Europa League final as an Arsenal player against Chelsea ended with him picking the ball out of the net twice and breaking up a mini scuffle with both sets of players that saw Drinkwater sent off.
No clean sheet for Cech, but he was able to celebrate a Chelsea win over Tottenham.
There’s a chance that Cech could make a senior appearance for Chelsea this season.
The big surprise when the Blues announced their 25-man Premier League squad back in October was that Cech was included alongside the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Christian Pulisic, and Mateo Kovacic.
And it was not an administrative error as Cech has taken up a position as a non-contract player, providing emergency cover for Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Willy Caballero.
