The 28-year-old is on the verge of completing a staggering £97.5 million transfer to the Stamford Bridge club ahead of the new season.

He has been prolific since leaving London, scoring goals at Everton, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

He scored an impressive 24 Serie A goals last season as he helped his side win the league title.

But Johnson does not see the excitement of Lukaku returning to the Blues as he reckons the league does not suit the Belgium international.

“I’m not so sure the Premier League suits Romelu Lukaku to be honest,” he told BettingOdds.com.

“Obviously he’s a big, powerful lad, quite physical but I just think the Premier League’s a bit too quick for him.

“So no, I wouldn’t like to see him return. But in certain leagues, he is going to get goals, albeit at a slightly slower pace.”

Thomas Tuchel’s side were also linked with Borussia Dortmund phenom Erling Haaland.

Liverpool reportedly expressed an interest too, with Johnson asked which side needed him more.

He replied: “He would be equally impactful at either club if I’m being honest. But I think Chelsea need him more.

“Chelsea would need him to revitalise their attack. They play with an out and out striker whereas Liverpool don’t.

Chelsea would focus their game around him.

“I think he will go on to have a fantastic career but he needs to find the right club to flourish.”
