Timo Werner does damage Newcastle Defence as Chelsea beat Newcastle to go Top of Premier League #NEWCHE

Chelsea claimed a 2-0 victory at Newcastle to temporarily move top of the Premier League table, with Timo Werner in electric form and looking a steal in the Blues attack.

Frank Lampard’s troops made a quick start, with Karl Darlow in good form in the Newcastle sticks. He pushed a low Timo Werner drive round the post, while Tammy Abraham’s header was turned over.

However, he was powerless to prevent Chelsea taking a 10th-minute lead. The goal was created by Mason Mount, who fired a cross across the six-yard box and Federico Fernandez, under pressure from Ben Chilwell, turned the ball into his own goal.

The Blues had a great chance to make it 2-0 when Werner flashed the ball across goal and Abraham was close to turning it in.

Werner then spurned a glorious opening when he found the ball at his feet in the area. Drving towards goal, he took a touch and then angled a clipped shot just wide of Darlow’s post.

That could have proved costly when a rare Newcastle break almost fashioned an equaliser. Allan Saint-Maximin ran at the Chelsea defence, his effort flicking wide after a telling touch from N’Golo Kante.

It was Newcastle who made the better start to the second half.

However, the first meaningful chance fell Chelsea’s way when a long ball over the top caught out the Newcastle defence. Hesitancy from Fabian Schaer let in Werner and one-on-one with Darlow, he decided to square the ball rather than shoot. That left a grateful Fernandes on hand to clear the danger.

Kurt Zouma was the next to go close, his towering header from a corner flashing inches wide.

The Magpies had the chance to level though when Isaac Hayden drilled a shot over the bar. The strike would have been chalked off anyway after a handball in the build-up.

Joelinton then blasted the ball narrowly over the bar after good build-up play from Saint-Maximin.

And those misses were to prove costly as Chelsea grabbed a decisive second on 65 minutes. The goal was created brilliantly by Werner who ran at the Newcastle defence and showed blistering defence to pull them out of shape. He then played a simple ball across to Tammy Abraham who found the net, beating Darlow off his post.

The Magpies though weren’t done with Sean Longstaff seeing a fierce drive bounce off the top of the bar.

Werner then latched on Hakim Ziyech’s pass to round Darlow and fire into the net, only to be flagged narrowly offside. It was his last action before being withdrawn, but his quality had been obvious for Chelsea all afternoon.

Chelsea celebrate goal at Newcastle

While he failed to score for a fifth successive game for the Blues, he was arguably Chelsea’s man of the match. Furthermore, the £47.5m Chelsea paid for him is now looking like a brilliant investment.

Mount then fired wide with the goal at his mercy, while Edouard Mendy then pawed away a Miguel Almiron effort.

However, Chelsea held firm to claim all three points and move top of the Premier League table for the time being.

The match also saw Mendy keep his seventh clean sheet in nine appearances to continue his magnificent start for Chelsea.
