League leaders AC Milan host struggling Fiorentina in Serie A at the San Siro on Sunday at 2pm.

Stefano Pioli has revitalised a sleeping giant in Milan, helping them go unbeaten across their opening eight league games and take a two-point lead at the top of Serie A.

Their start is particularly encouraging when you consider the fact it is the first time since they won the title in 2003/04 that the club has taken 20 points from the opening eight games of a Serie A season.

On paper, a home game against 15th-placed Fiorentina looks favourable for Milan, but they have only won five of their last 18 games against La Viola in Serie A, after seven consecutive wins between 2008 and 2011.

Although Fiorentina have won just one of their last seven league games, they do have a good record at the San Siro, having won their last two away games against AC Milan. Who will come out on top this weekend?

AC Milan & Fiorentina’s previous line-ups:

  • AC Milan (vs Napoli): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Kessie, Bennacer; Saelemaekers*, Calhanoglu, Rebic; Ibrahimovic*.
  • Fiorentina (vs Udinese): Terracciano; Caceres, Pezzella, Milenkovic, Biraghi; Pulgar, Amrabat, Castrovilli; Valero, Kouame, Vlahovic.

AC Milan will be without centre-forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic after he suffered a hamstring injury while scoring twice in the 3-1 win over Napoli on Sunday. Captain Alessio Romagnoli, Rafael Leao and Alexis Saelemaekers are all also injury doubts.

Giacomo Bonaventura and Franck Ribery both missed Fiorentina’s 1-0 win over Udinese in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday after sustaining injuries during the 1-0 defeat to Benevento last weekend and are doubts for Sunday’s clash.

Player to watch: Gaetano Castrovilli (Fiorentina)

The visitors may come into the game as underdogs, but the absence of Ibrahimovic and his 11 goals means they will have this season’s highest goalscorer of the two sides within their ranks. Gaetano Castrovilli has four goals and one assist in eight matches so far this season, more than Milan’s Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz (both three). That means Castrovilli has already been involved in the same number of goals in the current Serie A campaign as the whole of last season, in 25 fewer games. The 23-year-old has so far only won a single cap for Italy but if his form continues, he could force his way back into the reckoning for Roberto Mancini’s squad.

Serie A 2020/21 recent form:

Scoreline prediction: AC Milan 1-0 Fiorentina
