Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
Spain – LaLiga
Date: Saturday, 2 October 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano.

The defending champions against incomparable Catalans. This match-up would have been a classic in earlier seasons. But the story is different right now.

Barca are going through one of their toughest phases ever. They are on an embarrassing run in the Champions League, and by the looks of things, they are en route to being routed from the group stages itself.

Manager Ronald Koeman no longer has the confidence of even the most optimist of fans. Day by day, his stint at the club is coming under more threat, and one more loss this weekend could really seal the deal.

To be frank, this fixture against Diego Simeone’s men could not have come at a worse time. Atleti are the title-holders, and they have further strengthened their squad.

They also seem to have developed a knack for scoring late winners, and this just has instilled more confidence into the squad.

It would have been hard to predict the result of a match-up between the two in previous seasons. But now, it’s just a question of whether Barca would skate through without being humiliated.

Expect Atleti to secure a win this Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano, and thus further contribute to the woes of Cules – of which I am one, sadly.

Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona: Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The latest encounter had ended in a goalless draw.
  • Atleti are unbeaten in the last four meetings between the two teams.
  • They had kept clean sheets in the previous two clashes, while scoring six from the past four.
  • The last time these two locked horns at this stadium, the hosts recorded a 1-0 win.

Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Prediction

Simeone’s men lost 1-0 on the road the last match-day, against Alaves. In the meantime, Koeman’s men recorded a 3-0 win at home against Levante.

However, since then, Atleti went on to script a comeback win against Milan in the Champions League, with the winner being scored by Luis Suarez in the 90+7th minute.

And in the meanwhile, the Catalans had an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Benfica, and failed to have a shot on target for the entirety of the game.

Going on, Barca have so far failed to secure a win against a major team since 2020-21, and if recent affairs are any indication, it’s not to change anytime soon.

Judging current form and momentum, as well as recent h2h meetings, expect Atletico Madrid to manage a win against the struggling Barcelona.
