Everton vs Man Utd build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
After a slight wobble, the Toffees have picked up from their positive start to the season, putting Chelsea, Leicester and Arsenal to the sword in their last three games, conceding just one goal along the way. That run has put Carlo Ancelotti’s men back up into fourth-place in the Premier League table, with a challenge for Champions League football looking increasingly likely.
Everton have eliminated Salford City, Fleetwood Town and West Ham United to reach this stage and supporters will be desperate to see their side take another step closer to a first piece of silverware since 1995.
However, they face an incredibly difficult task against Manchester United, who are enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run in domestic competitions. The Red Devils have won all six of their away Premier League games this season, including 3-1 against Everton in November, so will head to Goodison Park with absolutely no fear. Even more so in the wake of their 6-2 win over Leeds United at the weekend.
So, can Ancelotti push Everton a little closer to that craved piece of silverware, or can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keep up the feel-good factor around the red half of Manchester?
- Everton (vs Arsenal): Pickford; Holgate, Mina, Keane, Godfrey; Doucoure, Davies; Iwobi, Sigurdsson, Richarlison; Calvert-Lewin.
- Man Utd (vs Leeds): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay*, Fred; James, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.
James Rodriguez has missed Everton’s last three games but has a chance of being involved on Wednesday, but Andre Gomes is still doubtful. Lucas Digne, Fabian Delph, Allan and Jean-Philippe Gbamin all remain sidelined for the Toffees.
Scott McTominay is expected to miss out on Wednesday after picking up a groin injury against Leeds, while Luke Shaw is also a doubt. Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are long-term absentees.
Players to watch:
- Everton: One-off knockout matches can often be tight, tense affairs settled by those who can be clinical with the few chances that come their way. In that regard, Everton have the perfect attacking weapon in Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Despite scoring just once in his last five Premier League outings, the England international remains only behind Mohamed Salah (13) in the goalscoring charts having netted 11 times so far. Calvert-Lewin is the perfect blend of rugged determination and intelligence, as happy battling alone up-front for his chances as he is being in the right place at the right time for a teammate’s cross, and it’s those qualities which have helped him fire the second-highest number of shots on target (24) in the Premier League this season. Calvert-Lewin already has three goals to his name in this season’s EFL Cup and he’ll be desperate to add to that by firing the Toffees beyond United.
- Man Utd: Rotation seems guaranteed for United in this one, with a number of high-profile players looking for minutes on the pitch. One such player desperate for a chance is Donny van de Beek, who has been afforded just 525 minutes of action across Premier League and Champions League play combined. Van de Beek is a brilliantly gifted midfielder, able to split an opposition defence open with a single pass or connect play closer to his own goal, while his propensity to drift unnoticed into the box served him well during his time with Ajax. With the European Championships looming large next year, Van de Beek needs opportunities to shine and the 23-year-old will certainly see this fixture as a chance to make a statement against a strong Everton side.
