Marseille vs Saint-Etienne
France Ligue 1,
Date: Saturday, 28 August 2021
Kick-off 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Orange Velodrome.

Marseille and Saint-Etienne are set to lock horns in one of the classic French Ligue 1 derbies on Saturday evening at the Orange Velodrome.

Marseille return to action after experiencing shocking scenes that followed the fans pitch invasion in their last weekend’s derby against Nice at Allianz Riviera.

Some of Olympique Marseille’s players were even hurt after the fans’ attack on the occasion and we can’t be sure whether they will be able to start another match six days after (in terms of their psychological condition).

On another note, the pitch invasion probably helped Marseille avoid their inaugural defeat of the season. Nice had a 1-0 lead when the incident took place (at the 75th-minute).

The Phocians thus have four points from two Ligue 1 affairs. The attacking line was a much better part of the team led by Jorge Sampaoli.

Marseille both scored at conceded at least two goals in each of their two league outings against Montpellier (a 2-3 win on the road) and Bordeaux (a 2-2 draw at home) so far.

They could well be in for another high-scoring thriller here since each of three Saint-Etienne’s 2021/22 fixtures have seen goals scored at both ends.

Interestingly, Les Verts played three consecutive draws at the beginning of the new season. If we count pre-season friendlies, each of the last eight games played by Saint-Etienne provided goals at both ends.

Marseille vs Saint-Etienne Head-to-head

Marseille will rely on their fabulous home form against Saint-Etienne as they’ve won 15 and lost only 2 of 21 outings against Les Verts at the Orange Velodrome.

However, Saint-Etienne earned the domestic double on Marseille in the previous term of Ligue 1, beating them both home and away without conceding in the process.

Marseille picked up a 2-1 victory when the two teams met each other in a pre-season warm-up, exactly a month ago.

Marseille vs Saint-Etienne Prediction

Backing goals seems to be the smartest call from the betting perspective as we can hardly see either of the two outfits keeping things tight at the back here.

We also see the value in backing Marseille’s talisman Dimitri Payet to score anytime at the 2.75 odds. The former West Ham winger has three goals in two appearances so far in the season.
