The Ligue 1 campaign is continuing on after a short break for a series of internationals to take place, and while Paris Saint-Germain may be running away with it right now, that doesn’t mean every other team in the league is simply going to lay down and accept defeat. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should be a fascinating clash between Lyon and Marseille.

Lyon

Lyon have fallen off the wagon ever so slightly this season but after a poor start, they’re beginning to piece everything back together. They’ve still got some superstar names within their squad but only now are they looking like a team who can not only keep others out, but cause some problems going forward. It’ll be tough for them to claw their way back into European contention, but not impossible.

Match preview: Team & Player Performance

This match was originally scheduled for late November 2021 but had to be abandoned after Dimitri Payet (pictured above) was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands. This resulted in Lyon being docked a point by the French league (LFP).
Olympique Lyonnais come into the rescheduled match on a run of six league games undefeated with clean sheets in each of their last two. They have picked up 10 points from a maximum of 18 from their last six Ligue 1 matches.
Les Gones won their last league match at home to AS Saint-Etienne. Expected goals of 2.2 to 0.2 in favour of Lyon indicates it was likely a fair result. Moussa Dembele was the goalscoring hero from the penalty spot with his sixth goal of the season for Lyon. Houssem Aouar and Tinotenda Kadewere both missed big chances to make the end of the match a more comfortable one. The final score of the match was 1-0.
Their opponent on Tuesday, Olympique Marseille, come into the match on a run of six away league games undefeated with wins and clean sheets in each of their last five on the road. They have picked up 11 points from a maximum of 18 from their last six Ligue 1 matches.
Les Phocéens also won their last league match away to RC Lens. Expected goals of 1.4 to 0.6 in favour of Marseille indicates it was likely a fair result. Les Olympiens’ Payet also netted from the penalty spot what ultimately proved to be the winner. The final score of the match was 0-2.

Olympique Lyonnais vs Olympique Marseille live streaming: Players Injured or Suspended

Olympique Lyonnais:- Emerson (Coronavirus), Lenny Pintor (Cruciate Ligament), Sinaly Diomandé (Ankle Injury), Jeff Reine-Adélaïde (Cruciate Ligament), Jason Denayer (Sprained Ankle)

Olympique Marseille:- Konrad de la Fuente (Knock)

Denayer and Reine-Adelaide are both viewed as doubts with the club’s insanely long list of absences reading as follows: Aouar, Kadewere, Da Silva, Faivre, Ndombele, Slimani, Debele, Ekambi and Paqueta.

Marseille

Marseille have a nice, balanced squad with a rabid fanbase – but with the expectations being so high for what they can achieve, it can be easy to get lost in the madness of it all. We’re expecting to see them flourish for the next few months before eventually slowing down heading into April and May, especially if they don’t fix their questionable home form.

Team News

De la Fuente is a fitness doubt with the following players on the shelf: Kolasinac, Bakambu, Gonzalez, Gerson, Gueye and Dieng.

Factors to Consider

  • Lyon are 11th in the Ligue 1 table whereas Marseille are 3rd.
  • Lyon have won two and drawn four of their last six games.
  • Marseille have won three and drawn three of their last six games.
  • Lyon have scored five goals and conceded three in their last six games.
  • Marseille have scored nine goals and conceded three in their last six games.

Conclusion

Both sides are starting to find their feet in terms of consistency and we think this is all going to be about whether or not Lyon can push Marseille back and hold them to a slightly lower standard in the final third. It should be quite an interesting back and forth but in the end, we’re going to back both sides to get on the scoresheet and both sides to share the spoils – ending in a 1-1 draw.

Prediction: Draw
