PSG vs Manchester City
UEFA Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 28 April 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Parc des Princes (Paris).
Paris Saint Germain welcome Manchester City for a mouthwatering encounter in the Champions League semifinal of the 2020/21 season.
Both teams are in the midst of fixture congestion, the Citizens playing their 4th game in the space of 11 days, while the hosts will be lining up for the same inside 10 days.
Yet, there will be no lack of ambitions with a maiden Champions League title in the hindsight, PSG coming close last season only to be denied by Bayern Munich.
They got over the same German opposition this term, in the quarter final on away goal rule after a thrilling 3-2 win at Allianz Arena. They had the toughest of routes in this competition this far with their round of 16 opponent being the mighty Barcelona defeated on 5-2 aggregate after heroics from Kylian Mbappe and Keylor Navas.
Manchester City defeated Borussia Dortmund with wins in both quarter final leg after doing the same against out of Monchengladbach. They are also the only unbeaten team in this competition with 9 wins from 10, the only time they failed to grab full-three points was on matchday 5 visit to Porto.
PSG vs Manchester City Head-to-head
Manchester City are unbeaten in the 3 overall meetings with PSG in Europe. However, they had won just once, that was in the quarter final second leg of 2015/16 at the Etihad by a 1-0 scoreline, The first leg in Paris ended 2-2 all square. Their only other meeting was in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, a drab goal-less stalemate.
PSG’s overall record against English Premier League clubs is 7 wins, 8 draws and 8 losses from 23 matches. It is only moderate to be honest, so do the home record which stands at 4 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses from 11.
City came across French clubs in UEFA competitions on 10 occasions and they bagged 4 wins along with 3 draws while suffering 3 defeats. In French soil, the record is 1 win, 2 draws and 2 losses from 4 games.
PSG Team News: Kylian Mbappe to miss the Champions League first leg ?
Kylian Mbappe limped off the pitch during his team’s 3-1 win over Metz and reported to have picked up a knock to the quadriceps. Early reports from various French media suggests that he is most likely to miss the first leg on Wednesday.
Mauricio Pochettino has further selection head-aches with Marquinhos joining the nursing table along with Rafinha and Juan Bernat.
At the same time there is some good news for the Argentine with Keylor Navas and Marco Verratti returning from their respective injuries.
Manchester City Team News: Fully Fit Squad available for Pep Guardiola
The Spanish coach has the luxury of a fully fit squad at his disposal after Sergio Aguero returned to the matchday squad on Sunday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham, though he remained on the bench.
Aguero is not likely to be rushed back here as well and we have seen Pep opting for a false-9 in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if John Stones manages to win back his position in central defense after completing his three match domestic ban on Sunday.
PSG vs Manchester City Prediction:
Both teams have plenty of firepower upfront, yet we expect an action packed match at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Therefore the over 2.5 goals priced at 1.67 odd is our primary pick for this Champions League tie. Manchester City scored at an average of 2.1 goals per game whereas PSG at 2.4 goals per game across all competitions this season.
Regarding full-time results, I tend to go with Manchester City, heavily influenced by Pep Guardiola’s h2h record against Mauricio Pochettino during their stint with various clubs across Europe. The Spaniard tasted victory on 11 occasions as against the Argentine’s 3 wins with another 4 ending in draws. City to win here is priced at 2.15 odd and I do believe that the Premier League is the more settled unit as in comparison and they are good to back for a full-time win here.
