Valencia will be hoping to kick-start their stuttering season when they host Atletico Madrid at Mestalla in La Liga on Saturday (3:15pm).

Los Che have won just one of their last six league games, and although that was a memorable 4-1 victory over Real Madrid, they sit in a disappointing ninth place with 12 points from 10 matches.

Turning around their form won’t be an easy task on Saturday. Valencia have failed to win any of their last 11 La Liga games against Atletico since October 2014 – their longest current winless run against an opponent in the top-flight.

Diego Simeone’s side are second in La Liga with 20 points from eight games and have conceded just two goals so far in the league. Atletico are also unbeaten in their last 11 away La Liga games, their longest run without a defeat in the competition since 2017.

Valencia & Atletico Madrid previous line-ups:

  • Valencia (vs Alaves): Domenech; Wass, Gabriel, Guillamon, Gaya*; Musa, Racic, Soler, Cheryshev; Lee, Gameiro.
  • Atletico Madrid (vs Lokomotiv Moscow): Oblak; Trippier, Savic, Gimenez, Lodi; Llorente, Koke, Saul, Carrasco; Correa, Felix.

Simeone’s side are significantly weaker in attack, with Luis Suarez and Diego Costa both unavailable, due to illness and deep vein thrombosis respectively.

Their presence was certainly missed on Wednesday as front two Angel Correa and Joao Felix failed to score against Lokomotiv Moscow, to leave their Champions League hopes hanging by the balance.

Hector Herrera, Manu Sanchez, Sime Vrsaljko and Lucas Torreira are all also unavailable for Atleti.

Meanwhile, Valencia are without Spain international left-back Jose Gaya, as well as Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, who are both injured.

Player to watch:

  • Atletico Madrid: With Suarez and Costa out, the burden of goalscoring responsibility falls on Joao Felix. The Portuguese forward has carried that weight well so far this season, recording seven goals and two assists, but an away trip to Mestalla is a tough task. Atletico are the only La Liga side this season which have failed to collect a single point courtesy of a goal scored in the second half, so Felix will need to come out of the blocks fast in Valencia. Despite not scoring on Wednesday, Felix has netted six goals in his last six games for Atleti, so he looks their likeliest route to goal.
