Zlatan Ibrahimovic slams “stupid” Cesar Azpilicueta as he explains aggressive barge

Zlatan Ibrahimovic clashed with Cesar Azpiliceuta during a qualifier between Sweden and Spain and admits he deliberately targeted his opponent again after taking issue with his actions

Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims Cesar Azpilicueta has “no balls” after clashing with the Spaniard in a recent international game.

The Swedish striker, who is now 40, continues to turn out for his country, claiming 120 caps since his debut in 2001.

Spain ran out 1-0 victors in their recent winner takes all clash, with Ibrahimovic and co having to go through the play-offs if they want to make the World Cup.But in the dying moments the AC Milan striker was booked for a shoulder charge on Azpilicueta.

Ibrahimovic deliberately targeted the Chelsea star after he’d made a comment to one of his Swedish teammates but showed no remorse for doing so.

He told the Guardian : “The other day in the national team, I gave a tackle to [Spain’s Azpilicueta]. I did it on purpose. I’m not ashamed to say it because he did something stupid to my player.

“Acting big to my player. It was a stupid thing but I would still do it to make him understand: ‘You don’t fucking do that. You don’t have balls to do it against me. But I will show you what happens if you do it to me.’

“That’s why I did it.”

Ibrahimovic was booked for the incident, but didn’t expect any reaction from his opponent.

“What can he say?” he added.

“He will not say it to me but he will say it to my player – who will do nothing because he’s too nice. It was not a good thing by me, but I would still do it. That’s me. I’m not ashamed to say it.”

The caution will rule Ibrahimovic out of the first-leg of Sweden’s play-off in March, not that he was bothered.

He claimed: “It’s not about missing the play-offs. It’s about making the guy understand you don’t take the piss out of somebody laying [on the ground].

“You don’t attack a dog that doesn’t talk. Attack the one able to do something.

“It’s too easy to pick on my teammates who are 20 years old and very nice guys. I hope he understands now.”

Ibrahimovic is into his second spell at Milan, but was a member of the last squad of Manchester United players to win silverware, way back in 2017.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently lost his job, leaving the club on the look out for a new boss, but the Swede had a clear message for them.

He said: “They talk too much about the past. When I went there I said: ‘I’m here to focus on the present and to make my own story’.”
